What is Falooda? Blog

I created this blog for Alpha Dessert Juice Cafe – one of the many clients of Alpha Marketing. It was designed to incorporate the keyword falooda into the website and increase on-page SEO for that keyword.

What is Falooda?

Falooda is a delicious Indian/Pakistani summertime treat, but here in America (especially in the year-round heat of Houston, TX and Sugar Land, TX) we like to drink it all year. Traditional falooda is made with rose syrup, jelly pieces, sweet basil seeds, vermicelli noodles, milk, and ice cream. Alpha Dessert Juice Café carries several different varieties of falooda though and the range of flavors is incredible!

Preparation and ingredients

Today, falooda contains many different ingredients. They can include: vermicelli noodles, basil seeds, flavored ice cream, sweetened milk, nuts, jellies, and other delicious additions (why not a bit of lime juice?). Wheat starch is commonly used to make falooda sev (vermicelli noodles) in India.

Many years ago, wheat starch was made into a thin batter and passed through a sieve to make this tasty noodle. Today, falooda sev (vermicelli) is available premade and is simple to prepare. One of the wonderful things about falooda is that it can be made vegan if you use vegan ice cream and almond milk!

Falooda can be mixed or served in a tall glass that shows each of the ingredients layered. It is also sometimes served in a bowl or plate with kulfi

History of Falooda

Falooda is said to have been created in Shiraz in Persia. This territory is currently known as Iran. It is said to have been created as far back as 400 BC. It was, of course, simpler back then – consisting only of vermicelli noodles, rose water, and semi-frozen sugar syrup.

It was introduced to India by the Moghuls. It’s name means “shredded,” which refers to the thin noodles that are a key traditional ingredient in falooda. In fact, vermicelli noodles are called falooda sev in India. Over the years, there have been many variations of falooda developed. Some have kulfi added or different flavors of syrup. Some come without the vermicelli noodles or include blended fruits or nuts. There are even varieties of falooda served as milkshakes.

Falooda Variations from all over the world

Falooda is popular in many countries around the world. Each location gives its own flavors and changes to the original falooda recipe.

Traditional falooda from the subcontinent of India is made with basil seeds, rose syrup, milk, boiled vermicelli noodles, and ice cream. It is served as a type of ice cream float.

Rabri falooda is popular in northern India. This option uses rabri (which consists of milk, sugar, and powdered cardamom). Sometimes mango is added to the rabri falooda, which is a delicious dessert often served at weddings.

Bangladeshi falooda includes sago pearls, pistachios, creamed coconut, vermicelli, mango, and pandan extract. It is very popular in the southern part of Bangladesh. This variety can also include black tea, which gives it a distinctive flavor.
